The Leap of Faith

2020 was a tough time for all of us, mentally, physically and emotionally. Very few of us were expecting to be at home for all this time, and none of us were anticipating how little control we’d have over what’s going on around us. The pandemic has completely changed the way we live our lives, from our daily routines to the people we’re able to spend our time with.

Before the pandemic, I found a lot of my comfort in external environments like my yoga studio. But with our bodies and our immediate surroundings becoming the full extent of our realities, I have been forced to confront myself.

One of the things I noticed throughout 2020 was that, as time went on, I was becoming more and more detached from my body. I gained weight, I felt shame, I busied my mind with work and TV, and I avoided mirrors at all costs. What this led to was a huge divide between my mind and my body as well as physical symptoms such as inflammation, headaches, dizzy spells, and an asthma diagnosis.

I know I’m not alone in all of this. If there’s one thing you guys have been telling me, it’s that you’ve been struggling with your relationship with your body too.

So, in this episode, and after deciding to make some changes in 2021, I thought I’d talk to you about three simple things I’m doing to create a kinder and more loving relationship with my body. I hope they’ll give you some ideas for things you can include in your routine that feel good to you. After all, it starts with the small stuff.

Let’s dive in!

What You’ll Hear Me Talk About in This Episode

  • 2020 and the impact it’s had on our mind-body connection

  • Seeing chronic illness as an invitation to listen to your body

  • Personification as a therapy tool

  • Breath coaching and breathing drills

  • Relationships with food and reprogramming your beliefs

  • Non-toxic skincare

  • Finding new ways to self-soothe

  • The importance of sensory experiences

Main Takeaways from My Experience

  1. It is completely normal to go into survival mode to cope with what we’re missing out on right now.

  2. We’re currently grieving for the things from our previous lives we no longer have.

  3. Finding things that you can do to make you feel good will help support your body moving forward.

  4. Breathing properly is so important and can change the way your body works.

  5. Relearning and changing the way we think takes practice and patience.

  6. It’s the small things done regularly because they feel good that will make a difference when it comes to how we treat ourselves.
